Reddit Ads

Reddit ads that don't get downvoted into oblivion.

Reddit is the one platform where people tell you, in public, exactly what they think of your ad. Corporate-sounding ads get ignored or roasted. Useful, honest ones get read. That's the whole game.

How we run Reddit Ads

Test targeting before committing budget

The obvious move on Reddit is to target subreddits, the conversations your buyers are already in. Sometimes that wins, and sometimes it doesn't. For Yizzam and Slickplan, we tested two types of targeting against each other with the same ads before committing budget to either, and that's still how we start.

Write for each community

An ad that works in one subreddit can bomb in the next. We write subreddit-specific creative in each community's own register: informative, specific, and honest about what the product does and doesn't do.

Treat the comments as part of the ad

Redditors reply to ads. Someone has to watch those threads and answer like a human, because a good reply sells harder than the ad, and an ignored question does the opposite.

Start small

Reddit audiences are engaged but often small. We test at a low daily budget, around $20 to $50 a day, and only scale what earns it.

Measure it as an assist

Reddit often influences decisions instead of closing them: someone reads a thread, then searches your name a week later. Judged on last click alone, Reddit looks worse than it is. We look at blended results, branded search lift and planned pauses to see what it really adds.

Proof

  • YizzamAbout 2.75x ROAS for an ecommerce store, after testing two types of targeting with the same ads. Solid, but below Meta and Google, so Reddit stayed a side channel.
  • SlickplanFree trials for a website planning tool, where Reddit was the channel the client hadn't considered and was most surprised by

That 2.75x is Yizzam's result, not an average across every Reddit account we've run. We've also run Reddit ads for Altium, the PCB design software company, alongside Michael Reiss of Advertology, and for Ground News. Slickplan's Ian Lawson said they were “especially surprised with Reddit.” We're running Reddit for a current client right now.

When Reddit is the right channel, and when it isn't

Right for

Reddit fits products people research and debate before they buy, like tech, finance, gaming, hobbies and home improvement, plus software for technical buyers. It rewards brands with genuinely useful things to say.

Wrong for

It's the wrong channel when you need volume fast, because Reddit rarely carries a whole budget on its own, and for brands that only have glossy ads. On Reddit, those get scrolled past or mocked.

Questions

Is Reddit cheaper than Meta?

Clicks are often cheaper. Audiences are usually smaller, and Reddit tends to assist sales rather than close them, so judge it on blended results and incrementality, not cost per click alone.

What budget do I need for Reddit ads?

Less than most channels to start. We test at around $20 to $50 a day and scale only what earns it.

Do you reply to comments on our ads?

We set up how comments get handled and who answers them. Ads with ignored questions underperform, so it's part of the plan from day one.
